Citizen Journalism - Good or Bad?

I believe that the quality of the news had been both increased and decreased with the use of social media. I say this because some aspects of the news have been highlighted where others have been diminished. Some of the aspects of the news that have been highlighted would be how how new features are being added to the news to make them more assessable and more interesting. Social Media is adding more things to news like comedy, podcasts, and videos.   Podcasts make the news very accessible for people who are working or don’t have access to a computer at all times, this summer I would put my headphones in at work and listen to podcasts while I worked. They have different categories so you can choose what you would like to listen to for example: comedy, electronics, shopping. Social media is also making the news more exciting for younger audiences by making shows where they portray the news in a comedic way, shows like SNL, and the Late Night Show.

            On the other side there is the news where the quality is getting diminished or forgotten. With the increase of the social media making the news more comedic they are forgetting to portray the entire story. They only show the parts that are exciting, unique, or crazy. One problem with the podcasts is that not all of the broadcasters are professional journalists; rather they are citizen journalists, so not everything they say can be professionally written in a non-biased way.

So what I am trying to say is that I think that with the increase of citizen journalists they have both increased and decreased the quality of the news is being put out today.

Convience just does not cut it anymore, we need more!!

I agree 100% with the statement that social media has become more than just a convenient way for people to keep in touch with their friends and families.  Companies now rely on ones profiles and online bio’s to learn more about person, to decide whether you are a good person worth hiring.  It has become more important for them to know what you do in your social life rather than how you present yourself in an interview.   Which I think is completely wrong way to look at it, because I can be pretty silly at times but when I comes down to presenting myself at work or in an interview I always act professional. So if someone was going to judge me on how I act outside of work then judge me on how I act in work they would see two different personalities.

Facebook has also become a place for educational purposes as well. In my old school some of the old teachers would create Facebook groups and they would tell you to ask them questions in the group because it is a more effective way for them to get a hold of us. They openly admit that they check Facebook more than they check their phone calls or emails.  Even teachers have fallen under the spell of social media.

Facebook is also becoming a giant billboard for companies; many sites you go on today have a like button for Facebook and other social media sites.  Companies know that if they can get you to post their products on social media sites many people are going to see them.  Even on this blogger site if you go to the bottom of the page where the comments section is there is a Facebook like button.

A few days ago I learned that even some work companies are using certain types of social media sites to manage their employees. I was helping my mother with her work schedule, because she is computer challenged, and it is all over the Internet.  The company has the employees using this website where you can modify your hours, make comments about your shift, and ask for time off. There is no person-to-person communication in this company.  This came to such a surprise to me, because I think communication is one of the most important things in a working habitat. Might I add that the website that they chose was incredibly difficult to figure out, so if I was not there to help my mother she would not have been able to do what she was supposed to do.
